Fall Inspiration

Okay all, I know (again) we've been slacking off in the art department, or at least in its virtual incarnation. So I've decided to put up a little post to remind us all that art is good and is something we should try to find some time for. Stuck for ideas? just stick with me... (mwua haha)

IDEA 1. After just thinking so many good Thanksgiving thoughts, let's try to put some down on paper/or clay/or paper mache'/ect. and let the world know what you're thankful for (or lead them down a meandering path as they try to decipher your artistic code, or gobbledygook). Besides you are most likely still so stuffed on turkey (or a vegetarian variety) and the W has you still too tired to do anything but art anyway ;)
IDEA 2. This is a great time for some photo/landscape/collage adventures. There are a number of amazingly coloured leaves out there and in Beautiful Victoria the weather is still warm and nice enough to take long walks and perhaps collect some foliage for a collage-type project, or snap some masterpieces, or even sit and paint the next great insert name of famous/your favourite landscape painter here
IDEA 3. Carving can be art - start thinking of pumpkin ideas, and should you feel so bold - bring out the knives! (for cutting gourds not girls (or guys))
IDEA 4. If you are in the throws of midterm woes, remember the use of art as therapy :) It can relieve stress and doesn't need to be done for super extensive periods of time...
IDEA 5. Feel free to post your new creations (or old ones we might not have seen yet...)

so much time, not enough brain

so i'm sick today, and bored out of my skull, for the last about two months i've been going none stop, even my days off were full, but today, my body won't let me stand for any extended period of time, so work is out of the question (my first sick day :P), and robby is at college, so i'm stuck on the couch, tv is really boring

what does any of this have to do with art? i'm not sure, but i figured since i'm one of the people allowed posting in this blog, i really should actually post something, so we'll see if we can't come up with something arty...

those that know my art know i'm more inclined to the written arts, it's not that i dislike visual or musical or whatever type of art, it's just that my talents (or lack there of) in those areas don't satisfy my personal agenda for creating art most of the time

so maybe i'll just talk about art, with robby taking the visual arts program at camosun i've been exposed to many types of art, and artists, i tag along with her when i can to exhibits and lectures and whatnot, i have decided that given the time and money, i would take an art course myself

anyway, about art, i've found that art that impacts me the most is art that reflects something, or lets you see something you wouldn't normally see, i mean, some pieces just look neat, but that doesn't really have much of an impact, that's one of the things i strive for in my art, when i go back and read/look at it, i want it to impact me, when i am in the process of writing/making a piece, i want it to feel like something in me is being released, revealed, perhaps even birthed...

if you've been around me long, you'll quickly realize that i have a great love for music, and though i love the sounds the artists can create, it's the lyrics in the end that draw me in, for many artists, the words in their music is a release, and i'm always curious to know what drives people, what their passions are, what they love and hate, i want to see the uncensored flow of their emotions and their heart

i wouldn't pretend to know how art is "supposed to be", i'm no great art critic, and until recently, i wouldn't even have considered myself and artist at all (changing my mind is largely julia's fault, i blame her), but i've always felt that art doesn't have to be about talent, or technique, it's about heart, emotion, and expression

so if you've even said to yourself, "i wish i could do that", then just do it, do it for yourself, not for anyone else, if you feel so inclined, share it, if you'd rather keep it to yourself, keep it to yourself

that's where i started, i wrote for about 3 years, just for myself, before i realized that i wanted to share some of it, and i'm glad i did, and other people seem glad too, i really enjoy expressing myself in that way

I have found a beautiful pattern for a toque (Julie, if you're reading this, I'm thinking of you :) ) Alas, I am not yet skilled enough to do it and have it turn out pretty :) So I have even more incentive to keep knitting and learning :) (I just need to make sure I keep up my other activities as well...)
One day it will be beautiful ...

hi art etc. gang...
I know we've been painfully silent since the Canada Day excitement...
But I wanted you all to know that I haven't given up on the art etc. idea nor have I quit using my sketchbook. In addition to studying like a crazy person and trying to experience some summer fun, art was a part of my summer (and I hope a part of yours as well...)
I was trying to scan some of my sketches but my computer is not receiving the pencil the way I'd like it to and I don't have a digital camera at my disposal so to see most of this summer's work you'll have to just ask me...
but above is an old sharpie adventure :)

thanks to everyone who did such an awesome job and put in so much effort for today. everyone worked so hard to get everything set up (and also taken down!), and i appreciated that so much. hopefully we'll have another community arts day for kick-off sunday in september, and then it'll be time to think about the psalms project in fall--should be a good one!

in the meantime, enjoy the pictures from today! I should have more pictures up next week, so check back--this is just a taste of what's to come :)

Okay everybody, July 1st is only a few weeks away! We need to sort out a ton of stuff for the community arts day as well as starting to figure out what pieces we've got for the art show. We're getting together on Sunday after church, so I hope everyone can stick around for awhile to talk and, if you want, to work on some pieces.

There's information about the community arts day on there now. I'd encourage all of you who have blogs to start plugging the July 1st events. You can copy the info directly from the art etc events site onto your blog if you like.

Jim has asked us if we could work on some artwork for his Series 66. He basically wants an 'object lesson' for each book of the Bible. There are three that he would like us to work on, and we have a lot of flexibility to be creative with these.

Here are the three he's got in mind for us:

Deuteronomy: Some rendering of the Greek letter Omega
-Symbolizing 'the last word'--Moses final words before his death, the end of the wilderness wanderings, etc.
-Sculpture? Painting?

II Samuel: An imperfect heart
-Symbolizing that David gave his whole heart to God, with all its imperfections (and there were many!)
-What this one would probably look like is a 3D mutlicoloured heart--perhaps paper mache??? One possibility would be using a heart-shaped cake pan as a mold and shaping wire around it. Once we've shaped the heart, could we layer the heart with scraps of crepe paper? What are peoples' thoughts about the feasibility/desirability of this?

II Kings: A blackened lightbulb
-Symbolizing the lights going down on the kingdom of Israel, and the inability to see God anymore--the key verse from that one is "Where is the Lord God of Elijah?"
-Any ideas on how we want to do this one? I think it would be good if we could still see the filament in the blub--could we cover it in a dark glaze so it's still somewhat transparent?

All right, I’m going to try and gather the ideas we’ve gotten from our e-mailing so we can talk about where to go next. We’re looking at having two separate events on the same day, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The afternoon event would be the Community Arts Day, which is geared towards kids and families. The evening event would be the youth event (name TBA), which would be put on by the youth at our church, but it would still be a community event—just a little more low-key than the afternoon. I’m going to do one post for the community arts day and one post for the evening youth event. One question we definitely need to answer soon is: when do we want to do this??? My initial thoughts would be the first Saturday after school lets out—there’ll be lots of families at the waterslides who might want to stop in and see what’s going on, and most people haven’t left for vacation yet, and it’s a good way to celebrate the end of school.

Community Arts Day
Description:
A community event that would invite kids and their families to create, to express themselves, and get really messy!
The day would include:
-Opportunities for kids to create at the event
-Some would be happening all the time (like Sidewalk Chalk), while others would
work more like sessions that would be scheduled throughout the day
-Some of the sessions we’ve talked about include:
-Paper mache (Dawn, if you want paper mache, you’ve either got to be in charge
of that or find someone else who will do it—I’ll help you with planning and
crowd control at the event, but I tell ya’, I ain’t gonna be in charge of that one!)
-Collage (could be a session or something ongoing)
-Wax paper, crayons, and an iron. I really don’t know what it is, but it sounds
good! So Robby, what is it?
-Silhouettes

We had also talked about trying out other session ideas with some of our middle school girls at a girls night after Dawn gets back and seeing what might work and what might not.

Some of the activities that would go on throughout the day could include:
-Sidewalk chalk
-Potato stamps
-Washable finger-painting
-Collage (could be a session or something ongoing)

-Hopefully have food and music outside the CMC
-Having some outdoor theatre (Dorothea, can you remind Lillian to bring her play to church this week?), including some improv

Questions We Still Need to Talk About:

-How long do we want this event to be? Morning and afternoon? Afternoon only? Maybe a 10am to 3pm type thing?
-Should we do one session at a time or run some of them simultaneously? Logistically it would probably be easier to do one at a time.
-How many supervisors do we need for each session?
-Are there any sessions that you are particularly interested in leading?
-Do we want collage to be a session or something ongoing throughout the day? I would lean towards ongoing, but then Robby you know a lot more about that than I do.
-We’ve talked about kids creating posters for the event—is that something we want to encourage kids to do on Sunday mornings beforehand and then turn those into actual posters advertising the event?

Youth Event

Youth Arts Event
Description:
An art show put on by the youth at our church that would include 'art' in the broadest sense of the word--visual art, drama, music, culinary art, written work, etc. It would have both individual pieces that people can submit on their own, as well as group/collective pieces that people work on together.

The event would include:
-As wide arrange of artistic mediums as possible (visual, literary, performance, culinary, etc.)
-Individual pieces submitted by youth as well as collective pieces that we’ve done together.
-We would also have opportunities beforehand for youth to create individual pieces on the same theme or using the same mediums.

Some of the projects we’ve talked about include:
-Give people totally random items (i.e. a piece of wood, acrylic paint, stamps, rice
paper, wires) and give a limited amount of direction—maybe just a few different
themes or ideas
-Give everyone a variety of mediums but one specific theme
-Give everyone the same medium and even the same colours--maybe just black and
white?--and see what they come up with
-Print out a large stencil, cut the stencil into pieces and encourage people to be as
creative with colour as they like--they just have to follow the stencil--and
then put the stencil pieces back together
-Throwing darts at balloons filled with paint stuck to a huge piece of plywood
-We also talked about doing a sculpture together called Redemption, where we
literally bring in garbage and modge podge and say ‘let’s make something cool
out of this’

Questions We Still Need to Talk About:

Name: Creative Showcase vs. Arts Extravaganza
-Personally, I’m a little more fond of Creative Showcase—I think we might put ourselves in a box if we use the word ‘arts’ in the title, and we don’t want anyone to be intimidated at the idea of coming to, or being involved in, an “art show”, you know? Plus, then I have to learn how to spell extravaganza—come on, guys, don’t make me pull out the dictionary. Any other suggestions besides those two?

-Are we going to display the kids’ work from the community arts day in the CMC in the evening while the youth event is going on? We would probably need two supervisors in the CMC, and we could rotate who is in there so you don’t get stuck there all night!
-We usually use the drama night as a fundraiser—do we want this event to be a fundraiser too? Personally, I’m interested in the idea of having it as a fundraiser, but not for our youth group. I’d love to see us ‘look out’ a little more instead of always looking in and trying to help ourselves, you know? The idea that I had was to use it as a fundraiser for some specific work that some missions’ workers from our church are doing with AIDS victims in an Asian nation (I don’t want to post their names on the Internet, so if you’re not sure who they are, ask me!)

Arts in the church--a contradiction in terms? We don't think so. Art etc. is a collection of people from Westshore Alliance church in Victoria who believe there needs to be more space for the arts in the church. We are made in the image of a creative God; creativity is part of our nature. We believe there should be space for people to express that creativity in our church, and in the church at large. We're not starting a movement, we're not overhauling the church as we know it. We're simply looking at creating space for an artistic conversation. That will hopefully include more arts-related events, more of a place for artists, and more room for everyone to express themselves creatively whatever their skill level.
